Title: Looking at Dogs
Fandom: Harry Potter
Spoilers: PoA, OotP.
Rating: G (angst)
Pairing: Remus/Sirius
Summary: Remus has an obsession.
Warnings: Character Death (Canon)
Word Count: 322
Notes:
Remus learned not to look too closely at dogs.
He'd begun by furiously proclaiming Sirius's innocence, those first few days after the capture, when he was sure the other man would escape. Every dog was a possible Sirius. Padfoot would come and find him and together they'd set about proving his innocence, together, because of course Peter had done it and Remus was a fool not to have seen it sooner.
But Sirius never appeared, and doubt was a crafty creature, expert at sneaking in to fill the void where other emotions belonged, and every hour Remus spent pouring over the story revealed some new hole, which only occasionally had a patch.
Isn't there some way, he asked Dumbledore, as they poured over letters and files and reports. And he was told no. No, there's no way, he was the Secret Keeper, no.
So for 13 years, Remus believed then disbelieved, and he learned never to look at dogs, less he wonder.
Sirius escaped, and though he waited, Sirius did not come to him. Then he knew.
Forced to revise his opinion again, he welcomed his battered colleague into his home and gave him what he could. Sirius returned the favor later during the restoration of Grimmauld Place. Gradually, dogs became dogs, and there was no reason not to look.
And then Sirius fell through the veil, and he could not stop looking.
